The following key principles have shaped the development of IC Global:
- A collaborative approach. IC Global has been developed in collaboration with over 70 partners from across industry, research and government, with new collaborators being added continuously.
- Leverage existing data. Expert Connect draws upon existing public data (via API) to automatically create and update researcher profiles, reducing manual curation and duplication of effort. The Innovation Challenge platform also aggregates information from other challenge listing sites, bringing it together into the one place. Using a federated data model, InnovationMap allows data hosted in multiple different places to be visualized together.
- Open data for ease and convenience. IC Global data is available via API, allowing any organisation to showcase research expertise or innovation challenges (or a relevant subset of this data) on their own platform.
- Bridges the language divide. Any business person can search for a topic of interest using simple, non-scientific language, and find the most relevant researcher/s to connect with. The Innovation Challenges marketplace also allow industry to describe problems in their own language, with the platform then automatically matching it to relevant experts.
- Relevant search results. Expert Connect considers both academic expertise and industry nous when returning research results.
- Done is better than perfect. Taking an agile approach, the platform was launched in beta in 2017. Work is occurring daily to enhance the data matching, improve and add functionality, and scale the platform globally. Funded under the National Innovation and Science Agenda (NISA), the initial mandate for IC Global was to boost collaboration between industry and research. Whilst the platform is still delivering against this objective, it has evolved to also support a broader range of activities.
Collaboration and lean methodologies have been central to the development of IC Global. Launched by then Assistant Minister Craig Laundy on 28th June 2017, the initial beta version of the platform was developed in just 17 weeks.
Following a “done is better than perfect” mantra, this approach allowed the IC Global team to better demonstrate what could be achieved by aggregating relevant data and presenting it in an industry friendly way. Having an early beta live also helped encourage a diverse group of stakeholders to get behind scaling the one platform together, rather than multiple different groups pursing their own disconnected initiatives.
Significant work has progressed since the initial launch, with a full product roadmap for future development underway. Key milestones to date include:
- IC Global Launch – June 2019
- FindHer Filter Launch – March 2019
- Launched on International Womens Day, FindHer is a service that aims to make female researchers more easily discoverable
- Innovation Challenges Marketplace Launch – April 2018
- The marketplace was launched, serving as a central aggregation point for the various challenge programs, and providing an opportunity for industry and government to put their challenges out to relevant experts
- Expert Connect Profiles v2 – March 2018
- A new profile fusion model was implemented, significantly enhancing profile accuracy and completeness beyond the beta
- ORCID data ingested and merged with existing Expert Connect profile data
- Static data sources were upgraded to API feeds
- The number of profiles captured increased to around 60,000
- InnovationMap Data Update – February 2018
- Working in collaboration with the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, Australia’s innovation precincts were added to the InnovationMap (to align with the launch of the Innovation Precincts Statement)
- Expert Connect & InnovationMap Beta Launch – June 2017
- Built in just 17 weeks, the Expert Connect platform initially featured profiles for around 45,000 researchers.
- InnovationMap initially visualised the SA3 Region Innovation Dataset
IC Global has a very full product roadmap that we’re working through with our partners. Key items include:
- Further university engagement – building on productive discussions to date, we’re negotiating access to data feeds directly from universities (to boost the accuracy and completeness of Expert Connect profiles)
- Expanded communication & engagement – the team are actively looking for opportunities to engage with new audience and drive further awareness of the platform suite. As part of this, we’ll be seeking ambassadors at each university and beyond.
- Platform Globalisation – research is a global field, and we’ve had approaches from several countries looking to get involved. As many of our data sources are already global, this is a natural extension option for the platform suite that is currently being explored
Research is a global field, and the IC Global platform has been developed with this in mind. Whilst the platform currently only shows Australian research expertise, many of the datasets we draw in are global.
